Picnic in the Park

The CLI team – staff, volunteers and service users, had a great time playing baseball and having a picnic – just one activity that its Bedfordshire ‘Moving On’ group organised.

The activity is part of the SAMAS – support, advice, mentoring and advocacy service, which offers one-to-one mentoring support for adults who want to move away from drug and alcohol treatment services to become abstinent or reduce substance and alcohol misuse.

The group activities play a big part in the work that the SAMAS service does – helping the service users build a community.

Beverley Copestake, SAMAS co-ordinator, said: “An important part of SAMAS is supporting people to connect with positive networks and do things they can enjoy.

“People are mainly referred into the service and we meet and assess their needs before they’re matched with a mentor and/or encouraged to get into different groups and activities we organise.

“We’re building a strong service user group, which is supported by volunteers and they get together to do ‘normal’ fun things.

“They also connect through a what’s app group, where they share ideas, events and generally support each other. It’s growing steadily and it’s a pleasure to see the progress they’re all making.”
