Esmee Fairbairn Grant
CLI is delighted to announce we have been awarded £90,000 for our work to cut re-offending rates, from the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
As the statistics tell us, 60 per cent of prisoners serving less than 12 months, and 46 per cent of all adult prisoners, are re-convicted within a year at an estimated cost of £15bn a year.
CLI helps people to move away from crime and substance misuse by taking control of their own life with new skills – from managing time, money and accommodation to developing new social networks – and improving their physical and mental health.
Stuart Spencer, 28, from Salford, turned his life around in less than two years with the help of CLI.
He said: “I had been living on the street begging and was in a treatment centre for drug and alcohol dependency when I first went to CLI.
“I began volunteering in the community earning an accredited qualification. Learning to make and edit a film for the Community Reporter project. It gave me computer skills and confidence to talk in front of people.”
Stuart now volunteers at another organisation mentoring people who are going through similar experiences and continues to use his media skills. He is moving into his first home and starting to apply for his first job since he was 16 based on the experiences and qualification gained through CLI.
He added: “I absolutely love what I am doing, it is so fulfilling. I was given a chance of recovery and I want to help others have a happy future too.”
Peter Atherton, Managing Director at CLI, said: “Receiving Esmée Fairbairn Foundation funding is a massive result for our organisation and recognition of the role that quality mentoring can play in turning people’s lives around.
“We’re looking forward to expanding our delivery across England and supporting more people like Stuart to take control and make positive changes to their lives.”
